GERSS 2009

5th Group awarded the GERSS Scholarship Autumn Call 2009/10

One of the outcomes of the German-Egyptian Year of Science and Technology 2007

The year 2007 was declared as the German Egyptian Year of Science and Technology, focusing on scientific activities and co-operation between Germany and Egypt.

The Year of Science is considered to be the base of a long lasting and productive scientific and technological relationship between Egypt and Germany.

Numerous scientific events were held during the year 2007 focusing on five main topics: Material Sciences, Water, Social Sciences, Renewable Energies, Medical Sciences and Biotechnology. Furthermore exhibitions, workshops and cultural events were organized. Special emphasis was given to the support and training of young academics, to co-operation between science and industry and to the European Union’s research support programs.

In the context of the German Egyptian Year of Science & Technology 2007, a Cooperation Agreement was signed between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MHESR) and the German Academic Exchange Service, Bonn (DAAD) in order to co-finance the German Egyptian Research short term scholarship GERSS to support young Egyptian scientists to travel to Germany for research visits.

Among the young scientists who applied for this scholarship in October 2007, 14 candidates successfully passed the pre- and final selections and were by that qualified to be granted the GERSS scholarship. Their research visits in Germany will last between three and six months.

Interested applicants can apply electronically twice a year for the GERSS Scholarship; as of 15th of October and prior to the 30th of November (Autumn Call) and as of 15th of March and prior to 30th April (Spring Call). The GERSS electronic application form can be found on the following link: http://www.mhesr-initiatives.org/gerss/

The GERSS program is only the beginning of jointly financed scholarships between Egypt and Germany resulting from the German Egyptian Year of Science and Technology 2007. More programs are to come in the near future.
